Blue Springs, Missouri teen filmed women in bathrooms, police say

A 17-year-old is being called a “predator” by police after reportedly committing lewd acts and filming women in bathrooms along Woods Chapel Road in Blue Springs, Missouri.”The crimes he committed shows us that he needs help,” Det. Sgt. Keegan Hughes told KMBC Friday afternoon. “What he was doing, if convicted of these crimes, would definitely make him a predator, and prey on women for sure.”Police said the suspect, identified only as a 17-year-old, was caught by an employee at the QuikTrip on Woods Chapel Road near Interstate 70 filming women from the top of a bathroom stall while they used the restroom. He was caught the afternoon of March 25.”QuikTrip is working closely with Blue Springs law enforcement to ensure they have everything they need to solve this crime,” said QuikTrip’s Corporate Communications Manager Aisha Jefferson-Smith, in a statement to KMBC. “All QuikTrip locations are fully monitored 24 hours a day. QuikTrip remains committed to providing the best working and shopping environment for our employees and customers.”The teen is also accused of performing lewd acts behind women in stores along that same Woods Chapel corridor.”QuikTrip is the only place where he filmed women using the restroom,” Hughes said. “The other acts, which I don’t want to describe, are what occurred at the other stores.”Police said Friday they are working on identifying women seen in some of the teen’s cellphone videos from March 25. So far, 18 victims have been located, and another seven have yet to be identified. Those women may not have been aware a crime occurred. While the teen was ultimately caught at QuikTrip, police said the teen committed similar acts at other nearby stores. “In almost all these cases,” Hughes said, “the actual victim did not know they were a victim at the time. And that is what’s most alarming to us.”Police also said any woman who had something suspicious happen at businesses in that area in March or April of this year is asked to contact Blue Springs Police Detective Kate Tipton at 816-622-4196. Blue Springs police are not specifying in which businesses the teenager was performing these lewd acts, but will be able to tell from a quick conversation if it’s pertinent to their investigation.”We want our phones to be ringing nonstop,” Hughes said. “We want to make sure we investigate every possible lead, to ensure that we identify every crime this individual committed.”The teen involved has been taken into custody, police said, and is being held in juvenile detention.
