Locrian Mist:
The Man, the Myth, the Sex God

Browsing through little known artists, I recently found one of the sickest guitarist/composers I've had the pleasure of listening to in a while. This guy, single handedly, revitalized my faith in metal. Through sexual persuasion, Morbid Optimist landed an interview with this underground metal enigma: Locrian Mist.

MO: Just to get this question out of the way, seeing as this question is a staple in all musical interviews, what bands and or guitarists are you influenced by?

LM: The main four are Iron Maiden, Helloween, Morbid Angel, and Slayer. Other bands include Opeth, Buckethead, Summoning, Stratovarius, Cryptopsy, Type O Negative, Azeron (formerly Winter Reign), and of course Envinity.

MO: Going through your list of available music to listen to online, it seems your older stuff is harder. Is there a particular reason the harshness of the older stuff is beginning to wane away?

LM: I just haven't recorded anymore "harsh" stuff. I put the first few songs up to try and show what I could do. Now I'm trying to go the opposite direction with more soulful and soft stuff. I'm currently working on harder material which has been in the works for several years. Of course, just wait until the newest ideas come to fruition. They'll kill anything old I have.

MO: Damn, you're getting me excited to hear this new shit. Any idea on a release date? Also, what are the available methods for attaining your music (be it on mp3 or CD)?

LM: No release dates for a damn thing. I'm extremely busy with my day job, guitar lessons, and now working on recording music for other people. It's hard to find time to work on my own stuff. You can't get anything of mine on CD anymore. You can either download the music off myspace.com or ask me to send it to you personally via yousendit.com

MO: Seeing as you, and you alone, do all the music for Locrian Mist, I would understand that finding time to finish songs would be rather difficult. Are there any plans to add more members to the Locrian Mist lineup? If so, do you have anybody in mind that you would prefer to play with?

LM: The last time I thought of doing this was last summer. Two people I wanted to play with me turned me down saying it was too fast. Yeah, sounds like I'm just boosting myself, but that's what they said and that's how it is. I don't intend on finding anyone at this point. They're the best drummer and bassist I've ever played with, and if they can't play my stuff then I don't intend on wasting my time searching for anyone else.

MO: You know, I'm a pretty mean guitarist myself, I can play a GMaj chord with no fret buzz. Would you consider having me record with you?

LM: You're so damn cute.

MO: Looking through your bio, I see that you play for a band called Envinity, what can you tell me about your experience playing for them?

LM: I joined the band right after the first record was put out. I loved the music and was an instant fan. Joining the band was like joining up with one of my favorites. I couldn't ask to play with a better group of musicians. I've had my limits pushed far beyond what I thought I could handle, and I know I'll be pushed even further.

MO: That's pretty impressive to be brought into a band that you already love. How did you feel when you first started playing with them?

LM: Confident.

MO: No jitters in the least?

LM: I only had those when I first tried out. I can't remember being nervous after that.

MO: Can I bear your children?

LM: I don't think you've the appropriate hips, sir.

MO: You're right. So what is your favorite MorbidOptimism.com article?

LM: Zealousness.

MO: Any particular reason why you like that one?

LM: I hate Christianity.

MO: That's a bold statement. Now that we're straying away from musical conversation, why do you hate Christianity?

LM: I'll just say it's because it's a fear based religion. Anyone who disagrees, well, I feel they're blind to the truth. If Christ did in fact exist, everything written down and printed of what he supposedly said has been forgotten, taken out of context, taken for granted, etc.

MO: Understandable. Alright, now on to the sex, drugs, alcohol and rock and roll: Place them in order of importance to you.

LM: Sex, alchol, drugs, then rock and roll. I find "rock and roll" to be pretty stupid.

MO: One last question, I'm going to load this one for you: If you could have sex with any male on Earth, what man would you sodomize?

LM: Myself.

MO: Heh, sounds good man. Thanks for sitting down with me for this interview, it was a pleasure.

LM: I stood up the whole time.
